About the Curator

Karl Pendleton II
Grandson. Inheritor of grief. The man who refused to let Jim's name be forgotten.
"In the rubble of newspaper archive history, Karl uncovered a gold mine — a legacy left quietly, humbly, by a man who rarely spoke of his achievements."
Born Into Royalty
Karl Pendleton II was born in 1986 in the very house where Jim Pendleton would one day die, in the living room, while Karl was in fourth grade. He came into the world three months before his father, Karl Pendleton Sr., was incarcerated, a sentence that would consume most of Karl's childhood. Martha, Jim's second wife and Karl's grandmother, passed in 1990. And so, as he had done with Karl Sr. before him, Jim Pendleton stepped in and raised Karl the second as his own.
Five Days That Changed Everything
Jim Pendleton died on March 20, 1996. Karl Sr. followed him on March 25, 1996, five days later. Karl the second was not yet ten years old. In a single week, the entire male guidance structure of his life was gone. His mother, originally from New Orleans, took him back with her. After a few years, he was sent to Atlanta to live with her sister. Rootless and grieving in ways he couldn't yet name, Karl wandered down a rough path, eventually arriving at an incarceration of his own, an echo of the only example he had ever been given.
Redeeming the Time
Behind bars, something remarkable happened. Karl, autodidactic by nature, with an above-average IQ and a hunger that confinement could not contain, became a student. He would read approximately 1,400 books during his incarceration. He became a firefighter. He studied business, creative writing, sociology, African-American history, theology, and leadership with genuine proficiency. His writing craft was sharpened under the long-distance mentorship of award-acclaimed author Mathieu Cailler. Psychology and psychotherapy became a side pursuit that helped him trace the architecture of his own life — how he arrived where he was, and what it would take to leave. He created the title "Master of Knowledge Assimilation" to describe the convergence of disciplines he had absorbed.
Thirty Years Later — The Discovery
In 2026, thirty years after losing Jim, Karl was finally able to begin processing the grief that had been sealed beneath survival. That reckoning led to research. The research led to revelation. In the rubble of newspaper archive history, Karl uncovered a gold mine: a legacy left quietly, humbly, in the margins of a game that had moved on without fully acknowledging the men who built it. Jim Pendleton had rarely spoken of his achievements. It fell to Karl to find them.
The Leading Authority
Today, Karl Pendleton II is the leading authority on the life of Jim Pendleton. He has dedicated himself to the preservation of this legacy, and to the broader story of the men whom time has attempted to forget. He calls it the fight of the underdog. This archive is not merely a history project. It is an act of love, of grief finally given a purpose, and of a grandson refusing to let his grandfather's name dissolve into silence.
